I think the most immediate problem facing the world is climate change, and this won’t help with that. The work I do in physics does push technology though, and we’re definitely going to need better technology in the future.
I work on projects that help support new technologies so that will help to advance society and make a better future. One big project in our group looks at solar cells and supporting industry in making them more efficient and reducing our need for harmful energy sources.
As a society we are becoming more and more reliant on electronics and new technologies so its a really exciting industry to be involved in.
The main way I see my work create a better future, is that it could improve food safety when it comes to Salmonella. Still every year there are roughly 1.2 million illnesses caused by this bacteria, some of them deadly!
I work on space which I hope will make a better future. If we do ever travel to other planets in the future the research we are doing now will hopefully be key to our survival.
On our planet, the environment would be the challenge humans are facing. My work wont help with that but I model things on a computer so maybe I could use that knowledge to help the environment or medicine in the future, after my PhD
This is a really interesting question! it definitely got me thinking about how I can help our planet
