I’m not an expert in this area (I study particle physics!) but I’ll share what I know. The answer to “why” questions about living things tends to be “because it helps them survive better”. According to the theory of evolution, features that help creatures survive are more likely to be passed on to children, and over millions of years organisms evolve to have features that give the best chance of survival. So I imagine that millions of years ago, the ape-like ancestors of humans were in a situation where being smarter helped them to find more food, or escape predators. The smartest apes would have had more children, so there would be more smart apes around, and eventually a new species of intelligent ape evolved. That ape was intelligent enough to give itself a name — and the one it chose was “human”.
