Quite a big part of it is outreach events like this one! I also go to conferences around the world to meet up with other scientists and talk about work, and I use social media like Twitter to let people know what I’m doing and why.

I go to conferences, present posters, and try to be active on social media. For the longest time I’ve been thinking about starting a video series or a podcast on what our field is like, but I never got around to it. Maybe after this competition!

I think the main way I inform people is just answering their questions, when they ask me what I do.

Beyond that I try to tell people about physics and computing on Twitter (although I usually can’t resist the urge to be silly) and I help out at a lot of my lab’s outreach events, including an annual A-level event with 700 students!

I think talking about it is the best way! Events like this helps get students interested in STEM subjects and the jobs we do. I think there should also be a way for the general public to asked scientists questions. People are actually very interested in new technology, medical findings and space but they don’t have many ways to find out more information.

That is getting better with blogs, magazines, youtube videos and other things that explain science in an interesting way to people.

Outreach is definitely the way forward and I hope to do lots of it while i’m studying!
